Traded in the 944 for air cooled fun! FINALLY

I'm a complete 924 nut. And I loved my 944, but in all honesty, I was disappointed and not as enthusiastic about my 944 in comparison as the 924. The 924 is being built for track, so I figured for purposes of fun factor I'd keep it since i've put so much work into it.

I put a lot of work into the 944 for the last 3 years. But I always wanted a 911. So I finally decided to let go and go for it. I got a 1982 Porsche 911SC Targa. Strong running car, well taken care of, she's been a thrill to drive so far. My wife isn't much of a car person but even she enjoys it. Just a blast. Went to show my dad, he's a car guy. Never understood my Porsche fascination but he liked it as well.

So finally, a daily driver I can enjoy and be very happy with.

PS: I realize the tires are too big, they've been swapped out for OEM size. It was rubbing the return line. Fixed now

WOW! Looks like a great acquisition. A real plus when the family puts their stamp of approval on it.

Great find. Congratulations, I have owned a couple 911SC's and they are amazing cars.

Nice... I like the color. Though I guess I am a little biased.

Well I figured I'd post up an update.

I'm pretty finicky about my vehicles so I tend to start over from scratch on maintenance. I had no records when I bought this car, only a PPI and trying to hunt down the file with the local mechanic who did have some decent history on the car.

So.. I went ahead and took the engine and tranny out and just went through the car "While I was down there".

The list of parts replaced was a pretty nice list. I also cleaned things up while I was down there. I also did the valve adjustment and replaced a few oil lines as well as fresh gaskets. New clutch as well. Turns out the chattering was someone who wasn't paying attention when they machined the flywheel and it ended up having a taper, therefore the outside of the disc was grabbing and not the inside. You could plainly see it because the machine marks on the inside of the flywheel were still there whereas the outside was worn where the disc was meeting.

I didn't feel like "chancing it" with the disc or flywheel or pressure plate so i replaced them and remachined the flywheel. My machinist confirmed it was tapered pretty badly.

I had planned on having it back in a few days ago but found the bushings on the top of the engine were cracked into a million pieces. I ordered new ones with the local mechanic who had previously done the PPI on this car, they promised me next day delivery of parts, only to find out yesterday they forgot to order the parts. (at least they had the ***** to admit it) so now I won't have it back on her feet till next week. I was pretty pissed that they didn't order the part, and it's only a $3.00 part I'm waiting on. But, either way it's not worth getting insanely riled up over. It gave me a chance to ride my Ducati to work (guess I can't complain too loudly... wouldn't hear me over the pipes anyway!).

Anyway, here's pics. I enjoy documenting my progress on vehicles. I figured you guys might get a kick out of this. I posted this up on a few other forums, but I know some of you guys love technical stuff.

I haven't yet seen another SC locally here in the central oregon area. But I did see a new 997 the other day and we swapped waves. I just do not see a lot of 911s in the central oregon area. Then again... it's still pretty cold outside :P

I have to say, this is a whole lot easier to work on than my 944. Once I started tearing into stuff it sort of clicked just like my 914 did. I don't know why but to me working on an aircooled car is more fun. CIS is simple to understand now that I've worked on a few CIS systems. Valve adjustments are stupid easy. Tuning it up is simple. For some reason knowing that I'm doing my own maintenance makes me feel accomplished having it on the road that much more.

By the way this was all done at a friend's house. Not my garage. Someday I hope to have a garage as nice as his with a lift! Perhaps the next house after we sell the one we've got. I'm tired of having a small garage. He has owned a lot of Porsches through his life so he was happy to help me drop the engine and help me with stuff. It has been really awesome meeting someone locally with the same interests who shares the excitement of working on these cars. I help him, he helps me. He's got a 912 he is restoring, that was the "deal" - he helps me with my 911, i help him with his 912. Can't complain!

Here's the progression of the engine thus far.

When I got the car...

Cleaning it up and powdercoating parts

After powdercoating and detail.

and now

My friend wanted to go for a cruise with his GTR up to Smith Rock here soon. So I might just have my wife bring the 914, I'll bring the 911 and he can bring the GTR and we'll get a little Central Oregon photoshoot going. I'll have to post that up once all is good to go!

Wow...you do not mess around! That's awesome how much cleanup/tuning you were able to do already, and congratulations on acquiring another very nice Porsche!

Thanks guys. I can't help digging into these cars. Aircooled cars are a blast to dig into. I was somewhat intimidated when I first dug into the 914, but things sorta clicked and I got a real kick out of working on it. While CIS is still fairly intimidating, I find it fun and accomplishing to do my own work, it has been quite an adventure. If something goes wrong I have only myself to blame! Learning more and more about them as I go along.

Now that the 911 is where it needs to be I can work on getting the 914 ready for the season. minor fuel leak in the back (think one of the lines came loose) and need to rebuild a caliper and add a few things on the wiring harness and she's good to go!

Really looking forward to the summer.

By the way, when is spring coming? LOL! This weather SUCKS!
