I would do a 996. Trying to decide on making a change to my racecar/trackcar or not
All OEM 997tt/GT2,3. Which is noticeably wider than the 996tt/C4.
All body panels except doors and roof are 997. I believe this is the reason the previous owner sold too. He purchased 997 quarter panels, fenders, sills, bumpers, engine cover/spoiler and hood. Then he saw that the curve of the 996 doors at the front didn't match the rear edge of the 997 fenders - and the curve of the door at the rear didn't match the front of the 997 quarters. So he bought 997 doors. And then he noticed that the hinge pins (which are an integral part of the A-pillar) on the 996 are of slightly different length and position than the 997, so the 997 doors did not fit on the 996. So he bought 997 A-pillars. But cutting the A-pllars out of an undamaged body got to be too much, so after much head scratching he decided to sell. So I ended up buying what amounted to a rolling 996tt shell with a huge pile of parts.
When I got the car back home I started examining my options. The thing that had bothered me most since my first look at the car was the issue with the doors. As the car was not going to be getting a full cage, I was not going to start chopping the A-pillars. I also wanted a streetable car - so on the Autobahn I want the windows to seal tight at 250+kph, side airbags, etc. The 996 door innards (window regulator, etc) and door panel do not fit the 7 doors - they have no metal structure on the inside. And the side airbags in the 7 are in the seats. It took all of about 30 seconds when examining this with my body guy to decide that the 996 doors are staying and 997 fenders /quarters / sills are being adapted. Quite a bit of work, but we will have an OEM fit and finish when done.
If I would have started this project on my own, I would have most likely started with a 997tt. And if 996, I would have started with a car with body damage - and not taken apart a perfect 996tt (which it was). But as it was, I got a good deal on the package. So, I will have an all OEM-part 997GT2 RS replica that is easily identifiable on the exterior as a 996tt by the door handles.

Looks great and probably was a really good package deal!! :-)
I was thinking the exakt same thing around the doors and had the same solution as you implemented..
But for now I gonna try to do as little as possible and only change the rear end of the car!
What are you doing for front fenders? The kit in Germany - I believe I remember reading somewhere that SMR had the Albert Motorsport kit - is also avail for the 996. I would have to go back and ask again, but I am reasonably sure these were 997 RSR look fenders made for 996 doors.
Are you putting 997tt quarter panels under your rear flares or just doing glass overlay pieces? With more race orientation that is good - I looked at doing this when I was considering the RSR build too.
