Swapping out OEM Nav unit

I'm looking to replace my '02 (pre-MOST) nav unit radio with am aftermarket double DIN unit. Does anyone know if I can use the same VW wiring adapter as the non-nav radio? Any other installation issues I should be aware of?

If you look on some other threads, you will find that you MAY have issues trying to use the factory amp with the aftermarket head unit. I tried, and I wasn't able to get it to work, due to the anti-theft features built into the electronics. I ended up putting in an aftermarket amp to get around that issue. Someone who knows what they are doing could probably figure out an easier way though. If you do use the VW harness, just be aware that the red and yellow wires are reversed - Yellow is the switched power and red is the constant, rather than the other way around.

Thanks for the reply. It seems strange that you don't run into any problems replacing the single DIN factory radio.

Has anyone successfully replaced the factory NAV with an aftermarket double DIN and kept the rest of the system stock?

Yep.

AVIC D3 with xm/traffic nav/ipod/usb music/bluetooth (works with iphone fine). Other units have since come out (2 years ago now...wow!). I had it installed at a professional shop. No issues. I think I paid 150 to have it all installed in terms of the labor....way cheap compared to normal Porsche work.

It has been flawless and it sounds great with the stock BOSE speakers. I had PCM1 which died. It as < 50% of the cost of a new OEM unit, assuming I could get one.

I had the factory navigation unit an the non-bose amp/speakers (amp was harmon).

I replaced the head unit with a pioneer 900BT and could not get the factory amp to work with the aftermarket head unit. I needed to plug both head units in (factory and aftermarket) and enter the security code into the factory unit in order to get sound.

I ended up installing an aftermarket 6 channel amp to solve the problem. I might have been able to solve the security issue if I had tested all the wiring at the amp to see what was being turned on after the security code was entered, but the other concern I had with the factory amp was when it did come on (when both units were plugged in) the sound wasn't that great coming from the aftermarket unit through the factory amp.

Swapping in the aftermarket amp seemed to be the easiest solution....

My current interior is nicer (lost the wood, btter pedals..etc.)...but you cannot see the stereo.

Kenwood and Eclipse are good too. Try them all and look at Crutchfield.com....for ideas. My stereo shop had no issues with my pre-most wiring.

I have a 2001 non-most, non-bose and I changed out the HU to an Eclipse AVN6620. I had to use the RCA outputs on the radio to retain use of the stock amp.

OK, I installed a double DIN Pioneer DVD touchscreen and it was a snap! I purchased the Metra 70-1787 and 70-1784 wiring harnesses, but it turns out that you only need the 70-1784 (along with the antenna adapter). You simply run the blue remote turn on wire and shove it into the yellow plug from the factory harness. You don't even need to mess with the RCA cables supplied with the 70-1784 kit. Like everyone said, the red and orange 12V leads are reversed for some reason on my '02 996TT with factory BOSE and nav.

Awesome link! That faceplate used in the first link is great, anyone know where to get it? Its much more inclusive than the one I usually see on ebay.
