Yeah- WTF?

I've not built a water cooled motor yet - done plenty of air cooled though. My first build was spent making numerous tools: mechanical chain tensioners, cam nut wrench, etc, etc.

I applaud your build and creativity.

WTF is "rep" supposed to be good for, anyway? Screw that...

I applaud you for taking this on, Awesome job! I'm pulling my hair out just doing head gaskets on my old LWB Rover right now.

Congrats with your build. You are one brave and talented individual. I too have built a few air cool 911 motors, but when I read and look at how intricate ( cam timing)..it simply scares me.
Best

Thanks for the compliments all. This has been a lot of fun and I think that I've really nailed it so far. It is getting close now. I finished installing the cylinders, crank pulley, and now have the heads mocked up on the engine. The heads are going in next week for a valve job. My valve springs seem to be in good condition so I am going to use them again, just 58k on them. SRM shipped me a set of Cometic head gaskets, they should be here soon so I can bolt everything down. I'm considering my options for having my cams set. I tried the local dealer but they have not gotten back to me. They weren't sure if they had the tools or not.

A little update to revive my build thread. I've been taking a break from the project having been on vacation and going to weddings but am now ready to proceed. My porting is finished and the heads are off to the machine shop to re seat the valves. The intake side is good but the exhaust valves were pretty beat up. The valve stem seals were difficult to remove. I was able to pull them by heating them up with a propane torch. I should be able to bolt down my heads next weekend if the machine shop comes through for me. Hopefully I can get it all together and catch the last few months of the season.

Ah good to read this. I chuckled at the thread title and wondered when the cam timing would come as a crushing blow. (tools expensive and trying without them would be very bad idea)

I'm guessing they will handle the resealing of the head covers too then, the pattern and width of the sealing bead is important to not interfere with a few channels n such...

I'm not sure about the covers, I'll look into it. Have you built one of these motors?

I applaud your efforts! Keep the progress and updates coming! One tip, do not try a dial indicator based timing process. Only use the factory tools, or copies of them, which are pretty foolproof.

I did work on a 3.6L NA which required retiming and dealing with the head covers, lifters etc. The turbo is more complicated since both intake and exhaust is variocam plus IIRC.
