I've had a bit of good luck. I found a shop in my town that has a factory trained Porsche and Ferrari tech. Looks like they get most of their business rebuilding older Porsche motors. I stopped by and asked if they had the tools, "we have everything." I'm going to get it ready and drop it off tomorrow.

I've rebuilt about a dozen AC 911 engines, but no water cooled 911s yet. This pic was of a 3.8 993 RS conversion of a stock 964 3.6. A friend rebuilt a 996TT motor about a year ago, that's where I learned about the timing using factory tools being critical.

Any idea how many hours it could need to assemble the longblock?

i thionk the book is about 60 hrs. it depends on the knowledge of the motor the order things are done and the tools used to make the job easier.

I am like CBracerx. I've done quite a number air cooled but not done a water cooled yet.

That said, for the assembly of a stock motor (or non-stock no additional work required), 60 hrs sounds like a lot for a long block. An SC motor build and install only took a day and a half. Even with added water cooled complexity, I would not expect long block assy to take much more than a day - including cam timing.

If every part was clean, machined, and ready to go it wouldn't take long. I blew a ton of time scrubbing parts and going through my heads.

I talked to my tech today and he says that the timing keys aren't accurate enough for a real racing motor. They are going to use the dial setup. This should be modus operandi from now on along with angle torquing to go that extra mile to have a perfectly set up motor.

hodie21 is infamous around these parts
How's the cam timing going. I've loved this thread. Haven't seen anything way out of the question of a competent diyer. I just know the timing was the tricky part.

This is what Chris Cervelli used when he built my race motor... When he checked the factory timing prior to teardown, it was off a little bit.

I stopped by the shop the other day and I am currently in line behind some other cars they are working on. One of their mechanics is on vacation so they are swamped at the moment. They have the full set of nice Stomski tools. We were talking that we might advance the timing one half degree. Supposed to have better low end power that way at the cost of a little top end. Hopefully it will be ready next week.
