Question Should I replace the throwout bearing?

Alright... so here's my deal. Just bought myself a 2000 model year 911 with 45k miles on it. Everythings great except a creaking/clicking noise when I press/depress the clutch pedal... only when the car is hot. See original thread below:

https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...n-car-hot.html

I took it to my mechanic and he said that it's definately the throwout bearing, which requires a tranny removal. UGH!

So my questions/thoughts are:

1) Is it worth all the money (labor) to remove the tranny just to replace a $100 part (throwout bearing)? Should I just live with this sound for another year or two until I need to replace the entire clutch kit?

2) Or is a bad throwout bearing serious enough to warrant doing this right away?

3) I've alread told the place I bought the car from about this issue, and they said they are "willing to work with me on solving this issue", whatever that means. Perhaps they'd be willing to split the labor costs down the middle...

4) If I do decide to drop the tranny and get this done, would you recommend any other procedures, like the new double-o-ring RMS seal? Something about IMS as well? Maybe it makes sense to just drop the cash now and get myself a whole new clutch. It just feels ****ty to have to do this right after buying the car and when the current clutch is fine.

5) One last thing... I did get an inspection done before buying the car, but unfortunately the car was "cold" at the time and this issue didn't surface... so for all you potential buyers out there - make sure you drive the car for 30 minutes before the inspection happens!

Thanks!

Dave

I can't tell you to do it or not if your are having to foot the bill. Now if the dealer that you bought it from will foot the bill then I would say go for it. While the are in there I would get them to replace the clutch and the AOS. Maybe if you tell them you will pay for a clutch plate and the AOS, plus labor for the AOS install then they will go ahead and replace the throw out bearing.
All I know is the around 62k I replace my throw out bearing for making noise and I reaplaced the clutch too. Both were around 2k at the dealer. Then 6 months later I was replacing the AOS for around $1500. It sucked!
As to the ISM and RMS. I am of the school if it anit broke dont go try fixing it or making it "better".

What's the AOS?

Thanks, function12!

What'st he AOS? What were the symptoms of that second repair you had to do (sorry to hear about that)?

AOS is the Air/Oil separator. Fancy PCV valve but ours is a ~$120. OUr is also water cooled. So, you can get water leaks or oil leaks when it goes bad. Mine was leaking water. Other people have there cars blowing smoke or dripping oil. A whole lot cheaper to replace while the tranny is out.

taking to dealer

The place I bought my car from agreed to take the car to a porsche dealer for an "expert" diagnosis.... we'll see what happens. I am hoping they pay for all the labor to drop the tranny and replace the throw out bearing. If they do that, I will pay for a clutch replacement myself, since the labor is free basically.

Would porsche put in the new double o-ring rms seal for free since it's a a design defect? or would I have to pay for that myself? I'm assuming the latter.

wait till the clutch starts slipping, then replace it all at one time. If it's not broke, don't fix it! That's my advice at least

Thumbs up fixed!

Hello all,

Just wanted to post a follow up on this issue. I complained to the place I bought my car from (carsourceusa.com), and they said they would take care of it... that after buying a porsche nobody should have to deal with that type of sound. So I brought it in. They took it to their mechanic, who had to drop the tranny and replace the throwout bearing. I guess the dust from clutch and other parts get stuck in the bearing grease. Anyway, it was a $100 part and $1400 labor, which was all paid by carsourceusa. These guys really took care of me.

Anyway, just got the car back today and the sound is completely gone, even after driving an hour in 90+ degree heat. I am a happy pcar owner once again!

Hope you had them change the clutch , rms and possibly the ims since labor was on their dime..

good story, wished i had the same success. So much horror stories about the ims, rms.. my ims went out, so replaced engine, only had the car for 6 months, now the headlights wont turn on, and the replaced engine shuts off when its hot after gunning it.. love the cars, but hate the problems it comes with.

That's actually good to know as I have seen many deals go through carsourceusa, but have been leary due to them being so far from me. Glad they took car of you, will look there for my next car.

TexasDirectAuto, looked at them a few times... totally different story
