They do pop out, 1st you need to remove the cover (undo screws) then you push/squeeze the plastic clip on the back that holds the silver lift handle. I have heard others say that you can pry it out w/o removing the cover, but I was afraid that i would damage the lid trying...
Hope this helps....

They do NOT pop out unless you want to pop out the 14 bolts that hold them in place. I posted a how to on renntech.org for this. I swapped my leather for aluminum. You will need small hands and a torx 10 socket with a 90 deg angle to remove some of the bolts. If you hit any resistance, check and make sure that you removed all the bolts. There is a plastic phillips screw that sits in the centre of the door panel that sometimes causes a divot or scratch in the center of the armrest. I removed mine without sequalae. The horseshoe mouldingt that travel between the door release and the arm rest/storage bin do pop right out. I hope this is helpful. good luck in your endeavor.

regards

what silver lift handle? or for that matter, any lift handle? is this something only some 996s have/had?

I have door storage bins but it seems to just directly rotate up with a small plastic bump/wedge picece stuck on the storage bin lid.
