Is this normal?

Yes I'll admit, total Porsche newb. over here. I have a couple questions, that I hope you guys can help with. Coming from owning an e92 m3 for the last four years, I still have a lot to learn about the Porsche. The car is a new to me, 2007 Porsche Turbo, manual.

1. When I start the car for the first time (cold start), I hear a vacuum noise/high frequency whine. It sounds like a system running and doesn't sound like anything mechanically wrong. It also seems timed as it cuts off after 30 seconds or a minute.

2. The motor is not quiet. At idle, you definitely here some metal noises. Again nothing that sounds alarming but just curious as to whether this motor is noisy in nature. I think I read it somewhere but wanted to confirm.

3. Clutch/Reverse. So although I come from a manual m3, I stall like a complete newb, everytime I am reversing into my driveway which has an incline to get up. I usually just turn on the sport mode as it allows for more throttle. Any advice or concerns here? Or is this just something normal to get use to.

4. I have a tire pressure error, that asks if new wheels have been put on. I am not able to find a menu to reset this. Does this mean my TPMS might have gone bad? The tires have the appropriate PSI's in there.

Thanks in advance guys.

I have only had the car for three weeks so still trying to understand and figure it out.

I'm new to the 997tt as well, but stalling in 1st or reverse happens easily if you are in sport mode, the more aggressive throttle mapping makes it much harder to be smooth imo.

Let me see if I can chime in. I'm also new to the 997TT but I had a 996TT but here are my thoughts.

2. The motor is not quiet. At idle, you definitely here some metal noises. Again nothing that sounds alarming but just curious as to whether this motor is noisy in nature. I think I read it somewhere but wanted to confirm. - It is noisy...sometimes I feel like it's running with metal in a jar sound.

I usually just turn on the sport mode as it allows for more throttle. Any advice or concerns here? Or is this just something normal to get use to. - I only reversed up my inclined driveway once and it smelled like burnt clutch so I stopped doing that.

Are you getting an error message? Like this?

Make sure you air up the tires to the recommended pressure and reset the sensors as per the manual.

Thanks in advance guys.

Try using the handbrake. Once you feel the clutch is grabbing, release the handbrake and be gentle but quick with clutch and gas. On the other hand, as the PrecisionPorsch mentioned, better not back up inclines at all or your clutch will be a real consumable, that could get expensive.

I grew up in Stockholm.
Must be really expensive to own a 997T there.

1. Yes, it's the normal startup sound and I wish it always sounded like this at idle. Pretty cool to hear the turbos on idle.
2. Yes, a Mezger engine warmed up sounds like a bucket-o-bolts about to tip over at idle. It's almost embarrassing and a good reason to get and aftermarket exhaust.
3. Practice. It should not be that much of an issue. I've never had it?
4. It looks like it is telling you to add pressure? Check the manual, it should have the correct values..

I only had it for short while but as soon as my warranty is out, I will need to find
a good non-p dealer to take care of her.

Thanks. Mine does not even show the diagram. I get the red exclamation sign but not the low pressure sign. I'm starting to think my tpms might have gone bad.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. Never been so happy to hear that an engine sounding like a bucket of bolts is normal! As for the clutch, it may require me just getting use to it. It's definitely a different feel from the m3.

That means that new tires have put on and the system has to learn. In the menu you select the tires etc.

I also have a 2007 Turbo with 6 speed manual:
1. Yes, it's normal and goes away after startup.
2. Yes, a Mezger engine has always had a timing chain noise. Just the way it is.
3. You will get better with the gas/clutch pedals after some time in the driver seat.
4. You will need to replace the tire pressure sensors. The life on them is around 5 years. I replaced mine and all codes and problems went away. Since your car is a 2007 and possibly manufactured in 2006, you are due. Do a search on this forum and you will see many posts on this issue.

Congrats on the Turbo. Your BMW days are over. Remember the Porsche motto: "THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE!"

startup noise is the air pump, something to do with reducing emmisions at startup.

Vin, you dont need to replace all sensors for tpms to work.
The durametric can read how much remaining battery life is estimated on each corner, and show which one is bad. If one is not working, the whole system stops working.
TPMS sensors are made by Beru. I dont recall the part number but a quick google search will get you that info - that is to save from dealer price.
Good luck.
