997 battery replacement recommendation
I got the H7-AGM (absorbed glass mat) 1,000 CRANKING AMP 800 COLD CRANKING AMP AUTOZONE PLATINUM for $130.
It was $190 but I had $60 in discounts. 3 year warranty.

Just picked up the H7 from Walmart. $119. The vent cap is part of the plastic cover on the + terminal of the battery. The person at the register did not know what I was talking about, but the tech in the shop did. No doubt this battery is lighter than the OEM, but the OEM was only about 530 CCA and this one is 790. The dealer already changed the battery once under wareentee, but now the car is 7 years old, and the Arizona dry air kills batteries very quickly so this was the best alternative.
A note about the Walmart warentee. They have changed it in that it is free replacement in the 1st three years, but if you change the battery during the wareentee, you do not reset the time. Thus if you change the battery at 2 1/2 years, you only get 1/2 year of free replacement. Most batteries in AZ do not last more than 2-3 years so this may be an issue when comparing to places like autozone, etc (unless they too have change the warrantee policies).

Both of my cars are '08's, so I decided to be proactive and replace both batteries this past weekend rather than going out one morning to hear the "click-click-click" of a dead one. This NEVER happens at a "convenient" time or in pleasant weather. Bought both MAXX batts from WalMart, both were $120.00 each, and now I have one less thing to be concerned about. The P-car was a piece of cake, but the freaking Audi was a bit more involved. The stock Audi A6 battery was a monster and weighed a lot more than the MAXX, even though the CCA and AH specs were identical.
If this board is any indication, WalMart MAXX batts are the new standard for battery replacement on Porsches. If a prospective buyer makes any kind of big deal about what battery I put in as a negotiating point, they can take a walk.
Oh, and not that it matters in the least, but I think the MAXX is a cleaner looking battery than the stock Moll, too.

My battery was replaced about a year ago by Porsche under warranty with the Alternator Cable issue. My car seems a little slow to start. I am wondering if the OEM batteries just don't have a high enough CCA like an aftermarket. Does the Walmart battery seem to fire the car right up?
(Bazinga!)

According to BMW, any significant discharge of a lead acid battery may severely impact the total life expectancy of the battery. I'm not at all certain whether this would apply to a gel battery or not. In nickle cadmium batteries (Ni-Cad) used in jet aircraft, the process is almost just the opposite, as they require periodic "deep cycling" which entails a complete discharge and recharge to maintain the health of the battery. Many aircraft operators are now going to gel batteries as a weight saver as well as a maintenance saver, since they don't require nearly as much attention or cooling requirements as the Ni-Cads.

As usual this forum proved invaluable. Went to start my (less than 1 week old - new to me) 911 last night and the dashboard lit up: PSM, ABS, etc… After a slight freak out and several google searches, I self diagnosed the battery was low. Ended up replacing with a Bosch 49-850B from Pep Boys (after a jump). In and out in only 15 minutes and only cost $135.00. I'm sure I could have gotten it cheaper elsewhere but not having to lift a finger has value in my life!
Thanks for all the continued great advice!
