Newbie from Scotland here. I have an 06 V8 Vantage with 17k on the clock which I bought last year.

Absolutely love the thing! It's had a couple of upgrades (clear lights, new sills and new pads) but apart from that it's standard.

I do have a problem that I need your help with though - a metal jangly rattle from the dash. It's above the air bag and sounds like a dollars worth of lose change jangling together when I go over some bad bits of road.

I've had every leather panel on the dash out, tightened every screw I can find and had some sound proofing put under there (which got rid of all the vibration type rattles) but still can't source the one noted above. Anyone got any ideas? It's the metallic rattle that's throwing me off, as everything under there is plastic......

Definitely above the airbag? I ask because the TPMS module (under the glove box) once came loose on my V8V and sounded horrible.

It was the defrost vents on my 2007 V8V. Swore it was the airbag, but was wrong.

 

Both off these are good. I have seen the defrost vent cause more of the noise, bt had a few where the tpms was the noise.

Thanks guys. I now think it may be coming from the vents as well, as I took all the bolts out again tonight, padded them all up, popped them all back in again and it's still happening!

The bit to bear in mind is that it's not a plastic rattle, it's not a buzz or a vibration either - it's a metal on metal jangle noise. As such I think it has to be a bolt or clip.

It's not the Tyre Pressure system - as I took that out a while ago..

The above thread on Pistonheads notes it may be a bulkhead bolt - anyone able to tell me where that is?

 

I know you say it sounds like a metal noise, take the vent out and see if the noise is still there. There are metal clips that help hold in the vent. Could be your noise.

 

In a recently traded 911 ..under the passenger seat was a small openning ...a bolt had fallen into this ...this hole led to a small compartment( bulk-head?)....the noise was so hard to isolate in the car ...until a porsche specialist listened...he immediately took the seat out and said look at this

Thanks guys, i've figured out it's definitely behind the dash now as I currently have everything out (dash covers, centre slope, sat-nav, vents, leather) and it's still there.

Day off tomorrow so i'll investigate some more and hopefully post up my findings!

 

It was the bulkhead bolt(s).....

There are four securing the dash to the bulkhead - two deep under each defrost vent. Take the vents out, hands down two/three inches at either side and the bolts were just spinning about loose.

Word of warning though - the vents are an absolute pain in the backside to get out without stripping the screws, so take your time and don't over tighten them on the way back in.

The rest of the dash has been packed with Dynamat so hopefully, apart from the satnav which I still need to fix, it's all good to go back on the road!

Now, since you've gotten so deep into the dash of your car, would you be so kind as to document the steps required to strip down the dash that far? For example, does the leather trim just pull off with force, are there hidden spring clips that have to be released, etc?

 

More than happy to document it all - however i'll need to do it without pictures or next time I strip it back out if you want pictures?

My thought is that if we have a thread that describes how to get as deep into your dash as you have, then we'll have a resource that any of us can use to remove or access anything that is in the path of that disassembly.

Years ago I created a thread in the Jaguar forum for replacing speakers in my XK8. Although the directed purpose of the thread was speaker replacement, it also contained all the data required to understand how to remove the door panels, rear seat, quarter trim, etc. So it became handy for anyone needing info on removing those elements, even if they weren't doing speaker upgrades.

 

I am trying to aggregate info on DIY interior trim removal and diagnosing noise or panel issues. If you are going to do a DIY step by step write up please consider starting a new thread and calling it

DIY: interior removal step by step for various purposes: diagnosing problems regarding noises, A/V component replacement, and panel leather issues...etc...

You can state the issue you had. then the fix for the issue. include in it the step by step process and documentation with pictures.
