In the 1950′s and 1960′s, no other marque dominated endurance road racing like Ferrari. But, there were three cars that did seriously challenge Ferrari’s dominance: the Aston Martin DBR1 in 1958-59, the Ford GT in 1966 and ’67, and the Porsche 917 in 1970 and ’71.
On Saturday, July 28th, we’ll demonstrate these “Ferrari Beaters” in a very special Demo Day. The Demonstration begins promptly at Noon with a presentation by Dr. Simeone on the history of the cars being presented and of the Le Mans race. Then we start the cars up and show you what they sounded like in their day. Please join us for this unique event.
And, yes – the Porsche 917 will run, weather permitting!

I wish I could have made it up to that.
I've seen few 917s in the flesh before. They are unreal.... back when you had to be a real man (or real idiot) to race a car that class. Like < 1.9k lb.s and some were 1100 hp. Almost .6 hp per lb!!! .... that's hi-perf. motorcycle territory..... like MotoGP motorcycle.
I remember reading or hearing about someone commenting on how little dirvers' leg protection there was and how any impact was sure leg crumple, and someone else commented that didn't really matter because the v12 would come thru the tin-foil firewall so quick and hard that what happened to your legs would be inconsequential.
That Aston buggy looks cool too.
