FYI-
I made a 1:1 template drawing of the finished kenwood bezel.
I will scan it to PDF at work on tuesday and post, just download - print - use as template.
This should fit all kenwood 7xxx units and save some time making things pretty in your 996 (not sure what years, i'm guessing that having the cupholder assembly like my '02 is key).
