PDK Help

I'm really having a hard time deciding whether to get PDK or a manual. I've always driven a manual. I test drove a PDK and found it nice, I didn't really push it since I had a sales guy with me. I'm worried i'll be bored with it at some point and and it will feel less sporty. On the other hand, it would be nice to have the option of having an automatic. I've read through every PDK thread on the 991 board but still can't make a decision. I'm sure others have been in the same boat, any recommendations?

My last two Porsches have had PDK - a Boxster S and a Carrera S - and I am very happy with my choice. My Cayman S was MT and my Shelby GT500 was MT. While I sometimes miss the fun of a MT, all I have to do is put it in Sport or Sport+, accelerate with gusto and chuckle over the almost instant up-shifts. And if I have the option of some curves and spirited driving then, once again, being in Sport or Sport+ I get a kick out of the fact that it is always in the right gear to maximize the situation. And finally when I am in traffic the lack of shifting all the time doesn't bother me at all.

However, make no mistake -- it does take some of the feeling of control and the historic sports car driving experience away. Just depends on how much you really want that.

I went PDK with my C4S (now I have a TT so no choice) as I live in an area of high traffic. If I was in a low traffic area it wold be a tough choice. Actually thinking of picking up an older NA 6-speed for days I feel like rowing.

A tough decision to be sure. Every driver takes away a different experience from their P car. All any of us can do to help you is to share our experiences. You will have to take it from there.

I have a PDK and was a life time manual driver. I am hooked on the PDK. It is faster, smoother and way less work on the track or in traffic. It also helps to prevent blowing up an engine from an missed gear. As an aside, I have only twice driven my car in full automatic. I almost always shift using the manual mode of PDK. This gives me the control over the torque and power that I want in my P car.

Good luck with you decision.

The short answer to your question is that there is no answer.

Drive them both..decide what's right for you.. and live happily ever after with it.

PDK has Launch Control. You might not always use it but it's pretty damn fun when you get that opportunity.

Drive a PDK in sport-plus and ask again about boring.
Sport-plus really brings the car to life. Especially with PDK

I'm a devoted manual transmission guy--all my cars have had manuals and my commute to work is 57 miles each way, in Los Angeles traffic.

That said, the PDK is darned awesome. Clearly it's the higher performance choice. While I love my third pedal, I'm sure I'd be just as happy with a PDK.

Honestly, I think you just need to flip a coin. You'll be happy either way.
