That is the bluetooth smart chord that hooks up to my Escort 8500 which I have mounted to the visor. It is a lot less obvious there compared to the windshield. I ran a standard telephone wire extension up the pillar to the visor area. The end you see there plugs into the lighter.
I thought about waiting and buying the new one, but I was able to find a very nice used 64gb Sprint one for $400. The extra cost for the new one wasn't worth it to me.
Nice, is it jailbroken?
The CDR-220 with the AUX output is always powered so yes, it keeps it charged all of the time, even when the car is off. The screen of course is off also. I have it set to 15 minutes of inactivity to lock but I always just turn it off when I park.
Even without jailbreak, you can at least emulate the buttons unreachable after installation to manually put the device into sleep mode. Assistive touch... (Settings -> General -> Accessability -> Assistive touch)
I'm going to try and pick up a retina mini in the next week or so and see how it drops in to my original installation...

What I do is use Pandora when I want to control the music with the radio controls, and another streaming music app (usually Slacker) when I want to control the music with the iPad. Or buy a head unit with no Pandora integration.
