iPad Mini in-dash install [996 MkII]
There is no way a slide mount would fit behind the bezel. The mini barely fits by itself... Perhaps you could modify the lower front console to have a slider mount in front of it, but the location isn't as good imho.
i have a 4" proefi lcd display that i would like to mount behind the mini. when im racing or logging i could remove the ini and then its hidden for regular use. move the stereo to a hidden location ( new sony with usb connection) and get my cubby back
Does anyone know if there is enough space to fit one of these sliding mounts? I would really like a quick removal option setup in the car as I would be removing the mini often. Thanks in advance.
It only takes about a minute to take the mini out as most of us have mounted them. Just pop off the horseshoe, disconnect the lighting cord and slide out the mini.
Brainstorming: Take molding clay and plug the holes in the horseshoe and get it supper smooth. Then take a resin/plastic mold of the horseshoe, and make a new horseshoe part. You will still have to make the main opening bigger and probably mess with the din frame in the dash. That would not be reversible.
I also found these sliding mounts. They seem to be more affordable.

I am not a fan of saying something cannot be done but there is very, very little room beyond having the mini in there. It can be done but you would have to relocate some or all of the buttons and dials in the horseshoe. You would have to get rid of the cup holder tray as well. A lot of custom work ahead of you to do it well.
- Retain vent as is
- Plan on relocating cig lighter, windshield speed control, and all horseshoe switches.
- Cut away bottom part of horseshoe bracket. Use top part as bezel for vent.
- Trim inner dash panel to provide enough clearance for Soundman Slider.
- Fashion new fiberglass panel holding slider, fitting up against upper horseshoe, rest of dash** (this is the part that a skilled fiberglass guy could probably do easily, but it would take me forever).
- Refinish custom bezel and upper horseshoe bezel to match, maybe cover in Alcantara?
- Add switches/lighter/windshield control to new custom bezel if there is room, or relocate to lower console.

Agree, it would be a fair amount of custom work, but the more I think about this, I think it could be done. I suck at molding fiberglass, but if I had some skills in that area, this is how I would go about it...

You will end up with a frankenstein horseshoe. Alcantara or leather would be a good cover if it went with your theme.
If I were doing this I would make a mold of the frankenstein horseshoe and then re-cast it. You would have a custom, one piece horseshoe. Either way, you would want to make sure to sand the part smooth. The little details will make or break how good it looks in the end.
Don't be afraid of mold making. I have done some cool things as a beginner. Lots of great products and info here:

...but ultimately, what does it gain? About $500 to buy a mini dedicated to the car vs. the cost/time to make it more easily removable? If the horseshoe hack didn't look & work as well as it does, I'd see more upside, but it looks pretty much factory.
So all you gain is 5 second removal vs. 2 minute removal.
Of course the challenge of doing it might be all one needs...

im going to get a horsehoe, back section and sideslider and see what i can come up with. theres tons of room behind the mini, thinking fab everything on the back piece and mold the front for cosmetics. i only need the rear defrost, central locking and the wiper delay. i can move the cig lighter to another location for a power source
Great thread. I just spent the past 20 minutes reading it thinking of how I'm going to integrate my iPad mini in my 997. So far the only easy route I found is to add the Padholdr dash kit, and bluetooth adaptor to my car. This seems like the easiest way to go, anyone on here use them before? http://padholdr.com/collections/pors...t-2012-5-05-12
Hi all. Firstly i would like to thank pfbz for posting this great tread. It truly inspired me to go for the mini ipad install on my 2001 996 C2.
Just finished last night with the install after weeks of preparation (buying the iPad, stereo etc. and getting the courage do do this :-)
One thing different from pfbz install is that i have a three piece horseshoe and it was pretty easy finalizing with all the comments and posts in the tread.
Im VERY proud of myself to have completed this task in one night as i am NOT really a tech guy.
I bought the Pioneer Deh-X7500S, at only $89 at ebay.com and ipad mini 16G, 4G (LTE). I also bought 8" subwoofer that i am going to custom fit somewhere in the rear.
It was hard going home after work today as i couldn't stop driving, testing the setup etc. I LOVE THIS . . .
Br. Dadi.

One thought - as i am going to make a subwoofer box later on i connected subwoofer wires straight into the outputs on the back of the head unit.
Not really sure its the right way or. Should i have connected the subs with the speakers ?!?
