iPad Mini in-dash install [996 MkII]
I left the face in tact. I used a dremel and needle files and removed "behind" the marked green area above. If you were to look at it from the side, I removed a "U" shaped channel. I took my sweet time and removed a little...dry fit...remove more...
In the end the iPad mini sits flush right up against the bottom support in the "U" grove and tapers to meet up flush with the cup holder front trim. it is such a snug fit I went with the home button on the left so the volume buttons on the iPad could rest in the grove on the bottom.
I will take it apart and take better pictures next week if anyone wants them.

some info update. i scored a ipad mini in black with verizon 4g and 32gb AND 6.1.2!! For those folks who are technologically challenged like i am heres some important info. from a software engineer you cant go back to 6.1.2 from a 6.1.3 mini. also if the mini is set up for say AT&T you cant use it on verizon network. also the 32 gb cant be upgraded. you get what you get when you buy it so go as big as you can afford. i was able to get mine with applecare until march 2014 for 440$ shipped. keep searching, the 6.1.2 can be jailbroken by evasion software but 6.1.3 or ios 7 cannot. ios 7 may have a future jailbreak but 6.1.3 is NOT ABLE to be jailbroken and nobody wants to try
i also got an iphone 5 today so im a bit apple overloaded!

What dremel bit did you use to route out the channel? Seems like that might be a little tricky...
The iPad isn't ideally suited for this as it doesn't have any direct video input.
That said, any wifi video camera (or bluetooth with jailbreak) that has an iPad application for viewing could be rigged up for a backup camera.
I personally don't really feel a need for a backup camera in my 996... In my F150 SuperCrew, sure, but not the 911.

Ok. May have to wait till this weekend but I will get some better pics.
I used a cutting disc for plastics. I think I got the kit at Lowes. It has discs for metals and discs for plastics. Makes a difference. Still tricky. I used needle files too.
ok i found a sweet mini with 6.1.2! it comes with a lightning connector. am i correct the lightning connector goes from the mili input to the sosche usp port then from the soschce to the antenna inut at the radio?
do i need a euro adaptor for the antenna input from crutchfield?

New receiver with USB interface + iPad is the way to go.
Are you thinking of using something like a Scosche IPFMRDS to play the iPad through your stock radio? Would not be my recommendation... The Scosche interface costs as much as a completely new receiver, and the sound quality limitations of using FM modulation combined with the overall crappy sound of the stock radio will be pretty limiting.

I went this route and have been very pleased with it. Since it's hard wired into the antenna there is no signal drop and the sound quality is actually very good. I do have the Bose system. 32Krazy you will need a 30 pin to lightening adaptor for the Sosche set-up. I don't believe they have a direct fit lighting cable.
