Fitting a turbo bumper....
Fitting a turbo bumper....
I just want to say that any info that I gather,THIS first post will ALWAYS be where I update it and it will be in red,for easy reading
Well I started this project and I should of waited until winter,LOL!
I am retrofitting a factory Porsche turbo bumper to my Carrera S.
Why?.....why not.....I really like the look and wanted to see IF it could be done without buying all the crazy expensive control modules.
ALLOW me to say that I am an absolute I-D-I-O-T when it comes to wiring....honestly!
So today was the day to see IF I could get the LED turn signals working.Searching the internet,it seems that people(NON-Porsche but BMW,Mercedes, etc.)) are using a 50W 6 ohm resistor,so I spliced(by gently peeling a little bit of wire cover and NOT completely cutting the wire...YET) into my wires then connected the LED turns......Amazingly enough it worked awesome UNTIL I turned on the fog lights.....YES the fog lights! NOW I had a stutter every third or so blink and an error code
!With nothing to lose I thought pull the resistor and try them without it.....worse case scenario.....it will throw another code!
So I do this.....it frickin' worked....even with all the lights on! For the life of me IT makes NO sense! I left them on for 10 mins or so and NO issues.
So know, what I am going to do,is completely wire the turbo lights in by weeks end to my harness and try again.
The way I see it IF I wreck a wire harness...who cares they are cheap and I will just buy another one!
So I pulled the headlight washers off of my bumper to put onto the turbo bumper and the hoses ran on the bottom of the Carrera bumper.....well on the turbo bumper the hoses were NOT long enough so with some re-routing(along the top/inside bumper instead of the bottom)...they end up making it without causing any problems. That is one problem solved!
I also noticed THAT the turbo ducts DO NOT work on the Carrera....this kinda scared me a bit because if my factory ducts don't clear the turbo cut-outs,it may cause the bumper to sit off the car.
Well the bumper fit really good, even over my Carrera radiator ducts.....thank goodness for that because the turbo ones were definitely different.
One thing I did notice is that the lower inner wheel well liners need to be changed to the turbo ones...so I am going to order those soon....and I hope they bolt up.The only issue I can see as far as mounting points for the bumper is one spot(centre hole) doesn't line up(too short). So I need to check to see IF there is another bottom panel on the turbo that is NOT on the Carrera.....other wise I may have one made by a sheet metal fabricator. If that happens I may include some ducts to cool the front brakes!
I will update the thread as things happen....but this will take a while, especially with ordering parts!
Here are a couple of preliminary pics.......

UPDATE
So I decided to stop messing around and cut into the wiring harness.....
All the lights on a turbo are present on the Carrera bumper.....only differences are......Obviously the LED turn signals.I compared all the wires of the fog lights and other lights and they are of the same size,so I wasn't expecting any problems there!
So cutting the appropriate wires on the Carrera bumper and saving the turbo bumper light connectors(by leaving as much wire as I could on each plug) I wired the lights in temporarily so that it would be easy to test if I needed to.
I wired them in with 'NO' resistor.....and low and behold.....the 'stutter' blink and fault code! Next up try and put the resistor(50W 6 ohm) on each of the power leads going to the LED's.....STILL a 'stutter' and fault code! Being that I used jumper cables on the resistors(like in the pic below) it was easy enough to mix and match different combinations.Next I tried only ONE resistor(driver side) LED and wired the passenger side direct.......IT WORKED! NO STUTTER and NO CODE!
DO NOT ask me why.....like I posted above I am an IDIOT when it comes to wiring.....
Now I just need to solder, heat shrink and tape up the harness and order the lower inner wheel well liners.
I also, took some flat black spray paint and sprayed lightly over the lower area of the front tub on the car......being that there is NO paint there from the factory and that the turbo bumper is open there....made it look purdy(pretty),LOL!
OK so this turned into a rather big job...one thing led to another,LOL!
Since the bumper got two small marks in shipping that I could NOT live with,I decided to have it painted.........along with my hood,side-skirts and rear spats(from rock chips).
Anyway, got everything back today and just waiting on the lower/front inner fenders....which I pick up tomorrow and with the tow hook cover!
I have this theory when it comes to cars....every mod comes with some sort of compromise and this turbo front bumper mod did too or at least the way I did it.Since I didn't use the EXPENSIVE Porsche module to make all of this work......One thing I notice IS that when I have all of the lights on and turn on the hazards,I get a code......BUT as soon as I turn off the hazards OR all the other lights.....it corrects itself...so I am going to live with this little hiccup until next winter,at which point I may pull it all apart again.BUT I figure IF I have an emergency....this is the last thing I need to worry about.
Here are some pics.........
Here is the little bracket I built to hold the resistor.....just to incase it gets hot(which it shouldn't as it is NOT running full time),I wanted to keep it away from the wiring.
I then lengthened the headlight washers hose.....as the one with the Carrera S was too short to run in the proper location
This is one of the clips that stick on the bumper to hold the wiring. If you have ever had a bumper off of your car, most likely these were NOT sticky anymore! So I used some very thin and VERY sticky two side carpet tape to put them on.
Here it is in action....
I then routed the lengthened washer hose and the wiring in the proper location
I then trial fit the bumper...using masking tape to protect all the edges of the bumper and fender while placing it on
Tested all of the lights
I bought some black velcro to put on the bumper where the cosmetic pieces bond too.....hard to believe that they use this stuff on these cars BUT I have to say it is a GREAT idea. This way there is NO unsightly screws to be seen!
Then mounted the body kit I built along time ago.....
So tomorrow the inner fenders and tow hook cover will be installed, the wheels put back on.....and I will be ready for a weekend drive with a PERFECT car(no rock chips)...BUT I bet that first chip is going to HURT,LOL!
On the ground and ready to roll.......tomorrow night the car will get a complete detail!

Holy crap, Stacy, you really pull out all the stops when you get going on a project. Kudos to you for jumping in and trying the LEDs with some temporary splicing. I can't figure out why no resistor works better than with the resistor... I have read about similar workarounds for BMW LED angel eyes.
Well, you should have enough time to finish out this project - the weather here in the NW is still hanging on to winter...
Well, if they say it's going to be sunny, I only believe it when I see it!!

Turbo bumper
I am in the middle of doing the exact same thing. I test fitted the Turbo bumper on my C4S Targa, it fit great. At the body shop now being painted, be ready Friday. I was going to take it to an electrical specialist to light up the LEDs without $825 cable from FVD. Let me know what works or if mine work, I will do the same. Im happy not the only one trying this.
Updated post #1...look for the RED update
Thank-you I think!
The end result WAS that it does need the resistor......
Good for you......it is really a nice bumper for our cars. The fact that it a factory piece....is a BONUS!
Wiped it down already after the pic.....
BUT I will wax under there when I am done!

WTG buddy.. i knew u can do it !
let me get this straight, tho..
no resistors for regular lights..
for LEDs, one resistor on driver side and no resistor for the passenger side?
Stacy, only u can have figured out this odd combo..
good job ! Can't wait to see the bumper done.
u can thank me later.

Ed,
My skin CRAWLS every time I see your car.....
I told you drop it off with a case of beer and lets polish, wax IT up!
A sleeker wind resistent car will turn FASTER lap times!
And the cone marks won't be as bad IF you rub one cutting the corners close!
YEAH right, you managed to make me throw another $1500 out of my wallet.....with this project!
As far as what side to use the resistor?....not sure it matters BUT this way worked,so I am sticking with it!

THIS has been talked about before and we all of come to the conclusion that I have NO skillz and that I am an idiot for starting these projects
when I have NO idea what I am doing(learn along the way) BUT I will say I have no problems embarrassing myself,on an open forum, about mistakes I make along the way,to get to the final result,LOL!
The making of my side-skirts and supercharger install to name two!
BUT thanks!
