Stage 1 Tune

Hey all! Looking into a stage 1 tune for my V8V. I've only come across the VelocityAP kit. It seems pretty reasonable at about $1400. Do you recommend any other tunes or know where to get the best deal? Any advice is appreciated. TIA

Is the difference highly noticeable?

I don't want to come off as snarky, but there's a huge thread on this that's still active. Easy to find.

Did a search and only saw a 2019 AP thread and one about stage 2 and 3. Mind pointing me to the thread?

Yes but that was with other modifications and only talking about VAP. I was wondering if there were other options? Also was hoping I might find a better deal but only see that RedPants and VAP sell them....

I originally responded that the VAP is a great tune. You asked if it's a noticeable difference. The conversation in the linked thread answers your question, on cars both with and without other modifications.

Thanks Rich, it’s a very helpful article and appreciate your email reply. I’ll be placing the order shortly!!!

Is this tune from VAP similar to what a Pedal Commander does? That changes the throttle response but gives no additional power. I assume that is where the tune comes in handy, actually producing more power as well as throttle response. I put a pedal commander on my 4Runner and it changed the car completely. Though the pedal on my truck was a complete wet sponge.

DonRW2007 is infamous around these parts
You’ll be very happy with the Velocity AP tune, even if that’s all you plan to do.

A Pedal Commander (and other products like it) change the signal being sent from pedal to throttle body to make it seem like the pedal is being pushed more than it is, making the throttle body open more for low-input pedal movement. In other words, it takes the slack out of the throttle response by telling the throttle body to open more than the factory tune tells it to open.
When that happens, your ECU is reading the signals from various sensors to see how the engine is running. It notices more air being brought into the engine and then responds by increasing fuel flow to maintain a certain air-fuel ratio (AFR).

VelocityAP goes through the tune and changes it so the throttle body opens more quickly, but the rest of the tune is already expecting it and acting with it, rather than in response to it.
They also change the rest of the tune so you get better AFRs (the factory tune runs very rich), which gives you lower emissions, more power, and better fuel economy in addition to the improved throttle response.

So a Pedal Commander/etc changes one signal and the factory tune reacts to maintain factory settings, but at a quicker rate (the improved throttle response) than the factory tune, and the VelocityAP tune changes all the settings so you get a better overall tune than factory with all the extra benefits, as well as the quicker throttle response.
Great explaination! Purchased from you Friday. Can’t wait to get it in the car!

Once you get the programmer unit you'll have to download your stock tune into the programmer (by connecting the unit to the car via the OBDII port) and then on to your PC (by connecting the unit to your PC via USB). You then have to email the stock tune file to VelocityAP (Chris) who will tune it (throttle response, more/less burbles on overruns, etc.) and send you a revised tune file. Once you get the revised file back you need upload it to the programmer from your PC, then from the programmer to the car. Don't worry, Chris turns these around fairly quickly.

Drive your car with just the tune for a little bit -- you'll notice an improvement and enjoy driving your car even more. But be warned, it is a slippery slope and before you know it you'll be ordering the VelocityAP 200 cell sports catalysts, twin plate organic clutch and lightweight flywheel, etc., etc. MWAHAHAHAHA

One thing at time but you are probably right! lol. I am hoping I do not need a PC to complete all of this. I only have MACs in the house. Is it only PC based?

The software for the programmer is Windows based. You may be able to run it on Parallels though. Or just use your office PC -- you just need the PC to upload/download the tune file to the programmer unit.
